So, sometimes you have those evenings where there is nothing to do, no place to go, and a good friend with whom to spend that down time. Last night was such an evening as my wife and I found ourselves without any scheduled things to do, other than the usual family commitments. So I got home, we went out and bought some cheap Chinese (along with a couple of diet Dr. Pepper's, the best diet softdrink out there along with Coke Zero), and took the kids to the park. My daughter played while we ate and my son laughed from his seat watching his big sister run around. We talked, watched the sun set, ate, laughed, remarked as to how easy it is to have a nice evening and decent food, and then headed home.
After getting the kids down (let me tell you what a blessing it is to have two kids who go to bed around 7:30pm and don't wake until at least 7am, sometimes later), we realized that I had brought home the last five episodes of The Office (with the cancellation of Arrested Development, this takes top prize in the comedy series arena for me) and we had an evening to watch them.
So we sat...and watched...five episodes of the Office...and...we...LAUGHED for basically 2 hours straight. What a great show and what a nice way to spend the evening. Some highlights:
- Jim faxes Dwight on Dwight's letterhead (posing as "future" Dwight); basically sends Dwight cryptic messages from the future, hilarious
- Michael can't tell the difference between the two Asian women he brings back to the office so he draws a line on one's arm in magic marker
- Prison Mike
- Lazy Scranton video rip off of "Lazy Sunday"
- Michael comments, from the back of Pam's car, "these aren't my shoes", after leaving an Indian festival
Afterwards, we watched a replay Justin Timberlake hosting SNL from this past Saturday night. Now, I can be pretty critical of SNL, but this is twice now that JT has hosted and has absolutely killed it. This guy ought to be on at least twice a year.
-give it on up for "homelessville"
-Bee-Gees talk show
-Hip Hop Kids show with the monsters from the Descent
If they could get him to do twice a year, Alec Baldwin to do two, and Christopher Walken to do at least two, then we could be assured that at least six episodes would be pretty funny every year. It's almost like the writers are just inspired more with certain guys. But I digress.
Great night, about 3 hours worth of laughter, and I slept amazingly well. Sometimes you've just got to take the time to do nothing and laugh with someone you love.
